WILDCAST CENTER: Mike Floyd dishes the dirt on late Westside musky bite!
NEW July 11, 2010 / 1:30 p.m
LAKE TAPPS, Wash. - Mike Floyd subscribes to the age-old theory: Talk softly and carry a big stick.
Or, more accurately in the case of the Westside's musky savant, carry a big net. And a big crankbait. And a big bucktail. The net is for the overgrown tiger muskies that the humble Floyd has a nack for landing: The 49-incher in the photo above is the largest confirmed musky ever caught on Lake Tapps.
I had the great fortune of tackling Tapps recently with Floyd and Darren Largent of Auburn Sports & Marine. I'm an admitted musky greenhorn, through and through - I've caught plenty of Northern pike, but the western Washington strain of this giant Esox is a mystery fish to me. That might explain the first words out of my mouth when I spotted a 50-plus-inch MuskySaurus Rex lurking over a submerged weedbed on Tapps' north end: "HOLY BLEEP!"
XLISTEN IN TO OUR RECENT Q&A WITH MIKE FLOYD and get a look at the Evergreen State tiger musky fishery (including details on the development of the summer bite on Tapps).

PODCAST CENTER: The NWWC Bait Lab opens for business ...
POSTED June 6, 2010 / 10:40 a.m.
SEATTLE - I always wonder what goes through the minds of people like Jeff "The Fish" Aarons and the Dawgman.com guys when they walk into the Sportsradio 950 KJR studios on Saturday, after we've gone off the air.
We have a habit of leaving stuff behind, much to the chagrin of our KJR sports-talk counterparts. Yesterday, we left behind the whiff of tiger prawns, cocktail shrimp and cured sand shrimp.
Sorry, fellas, but the NW Wild Country Bait Lab is open for business. Bring your gas masks next week.
XLISTEN IN ON HOUR 1 OF SHRIMP SCIENCE as the crew discusses the effectiveness of shrimp baits for summer steelhead.
XTUNE IN FOR HOUR 2 SHRIMP SCIENCE as Shangle, Herzog, Perusse and Inglin offer advice on shrimp brines, colors, scents, etc. Herzog jumps into spoon science, too.

WILDCAST: On a day of rememberance, we thank those in service
POSTED May 29, 2010 / 4:10 p.m.
SEATTLE - After seven plus years on the air at KJR - after chats with Bobby Knight, Kevin Van Dam, Les Stroud and the like - a simple, heartfelt statement from a guest you've never heard of will go down as the Most Important Thing Ever Said On The Show: "Hey Duane, it's good to hear your voice."
That from Lt. Colonel Kevin Inglin, speaking to his big brother, Wild Country co-host Duane Inglin.
Lt. Col. Inglin, you see, was calling in from northern Afghanistan, where he's serving the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in the U.S. Army.
XHEAR THE REST OF THE INTERVIEW as Lt. Col. Inglin talks about day-to-day life for our Pacific Northwest outdoorsmen and women based in Afghanistan, and how they cope with life away from their home rivers and streams.
XLISTEN IN AS NWWC CONNECTS WITH 3 SOLDIER/ANGLERS based in southern Afghanistan: Sgt. Jerrad Tilden, St. Maj. Charlie Chavez and Specialist Joel Michael Orazio, three avid anglers who were fired up and ready to talk about their favorite home waters.

WILDCAST: Johnathan Hillstrand on Phil Harris: "I can still feel him around."
POSTED April 10, 2010 / 4:05 p.m.
SEATTLE - Perhaps the most telling moment in my 20-minute interview with Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand of the Time Bandit - one of the "Bad Boys of the Bering Sea" on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" - is this simple, quiet statement about Capt. Phil Harris: "I can still feel him around."
Harris, who passed away Feb. 9, was, of course, one of the beloved members of the D.C. universe, and Hillstrand's affection for his fallen friend is readily apparent in 20 minutes of Q&A I did with him this morning.
"He wasn't supposed to go," Hillstrand said of Harris' untimely passing. "I get so mad at him, and then I miss him. He should still be here with us."
Listen in as Hillstrand talks about the start of season 6 of America's most popular cable TV show, about life aboard the Time Bandit, and about the loss of one of the most beloved characters in TV history:
8PART 1 WITH JOHN HILLSTRAND as he describes Capt. Phil's illness, his battle to live, and the sense of loss he and the Bering Sea fleet felt upon Phil's passing.
8PART 2 WITH JOHN HILLSTRAND as he describes his ... uh ... "disagreement" with another captain.

SALMON REPORT: US v. Oregon TAC's 470,000-fish forecast explained
POSTED Dec. 12, 2009 / 8:10 a.m.
SEATTLE - The first words out of Stuart Ellis' mouth Saturday morning spoke volumes about the angst behind releasing the official 2010 forecast for Columbia River spring Chinook : "There was a little bit of sweating going on in the room."
Ellis, the chairman of the US v. Oregon Technical Advisory Committee - the group charged with forecasting the 2010 springer run - followed up with a chuckle, indicating that he was only partly serious about the sweating. His message was clear, though: The gravity of a number that approaches a half million - the 470,000 upriver springers forecasted for the Columbia - was not lost on him.
"If it comes to pass, it’ll be the largest run of spring Chinook to ever enter the Columbia River since the construction of Bonneville Dam," Ellis told us last Saturday in an exclusive interview on Northwest Wild Country.
8LISTEN TO THE PODCAST OF OUR EXCLUSIVE 20-MINUTE Q&A with Stuart Ellis, chairman of the US v. Oregon Technical Advisory Committee.

NEW Nov. 22, 2009 / 6:20 a.m.

SEATTLE - It's been a season of firsts for US Olympic trap medalist Corey Cogdell. First mule deer hunt, first Kansas blacktail hunt, first season hunting brown bears on Kodiak Island.
Cogdell has been on a month-long hunting jag that would make Michael Waddell blush. From a 4 x 4 Wyoming muley to a 13-point Kansas whitetail to a 1,500-pound Kodiak brown bear, the 23-year-old bronze medalist has created enough work to keep her taxidermist busy until the 2012 Olympics.

NOV. 7: An hour with CAPT. RED BARTA: Wild Country crew talks tuna, "reel algebra" and wheelchair hunting with Versus superstar
NEW Nov. 8, 2009 / 3:20 p.m.

SEATTLE - Capt. Tred Barta has become a regular visitor to our Northwest Wild Country fire over the past year, but his past four appearances have left the outspoken host of "The Best and Worst of Tred Barta" feeling a little bit gypped.
"You gonna give me enough time to talk this time?" Barta asked me as we discussed his Nov. 7 on-air appearance.
Tred, it seems, has some things to say. And we were more than happy to let the man talk on Nov. 7.

OCT. 17: Four-time Olympian Kim Rhode offers gold-medal advice for Wild Country shotgunners on opening day of duck season
NEW Oct. 17, 2009 / 5:20 p.m.

SEATTLE - I've been trying to figure out how many shells I pass through my shotgun every year, and, no matter how many additional trips to skeet range or pheasant release sites I make this fall, I'm still going to be way, way below the number of shots that U.S.A Shooting superstar Kim Rhode passes through her Perazzi EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Rhode - who, for the record, shoots 500 to 1,000 shots a day - is one of the most decorated U.S. athletes in Olympic history, with two gold medals and a resume that includes more than 10 World Cup and Pan An Games gold medals. For 30 minutes on Saturday, she was our personal shooting coach.

OCT. 10: Eli Rico gets his Lake Sammamish suave on for the Oct. 10 NW Wild Country
NEW Oct. 10, 2009 / 2:20 p.m.

SEATTLE - The Mystery of Lake Sammamish confounds 9 out of 10 anglers - whether it be for Chinook or coho - but with Professor Eli Rico at the lectern, we made an attempt to solve the riddle of this urban lake fishery this Saturday on Northwest Wild Country.
Rico, the owner of Hot Shot Guide Service, and a longtime Sammamish rat, has this fishery dialed in to a level that, frankly, embarrases anyone else fishing it. As our own Bill Herzog says: "You can climb on Eli's boat, steal his s*it, and you'll never catch as many fish as he does on Lake Sammamish."
We'll have a podcast of Rico's Samm "how-to" posted soon.

With the 2009-10 waterfowl opener coming up quick on Oct. 17, we tapped into the Westside's most knowledgeble duck biologist for some information on the health of various species in the Pacific Flyway. 8TONY FLOOR, NMTA
NMTA's Director of Fishing Affairs ran us through the A to Z, soup-to-nuts drill for catching coho in Grays Harbor. Floor has been in the middle of the South Channel bite for the past 3 weeks, and warns us: "Don't give up on Grays Harbor, baby!"

SEATTLE - So, if we continue our series of interviews with The Fishing Geeks on schedule, we can expect to talk to either Sean or Adam Konrad in about two years, when they shatter the IGFA rainbow-trout world record again.
I wasn't kidding this Saturday when I informed Wild Country guest Sean Konrad that we fully expect either him or his twin brother Adam to phone in immediately when the Canadian Wonder Twins finally eclipse the 50-pound mark with a Lake Diefenbaker rainbow trout.
"We're pushing the upper limits, but, I don't doubt that there's a 50-pounder out there somewhere," Konrad said.

WILDCAST HIGHLIGHT: Gregoire: "We need a sense of urgency"
Nov. 1, 2008
OLYMPIA, Wash. - We didn't know it at the time, but the on-air conversation we had on Saturday, Nov. 1 with Washington governor Christine Gregoire was a sneak peek at her fish-management platform for the next four years.
Appearing just two days before defeating Republican challenger Dino Rossi in the 2008 general election, Gregoire strongly re-iterated some of the thought she had shared with us four years earlier, right before she took office in Olympia.
"I think we've got an education job to do with the legislature," Gregoire said in response to a question about legislative "roadblocks" that currently slow the growth of sportfishing policy in Washington. "We have to fundamentally change."
Listen to the complete interview with Governor Gregoire HERE
