NW Wild Country A.M. Briefing, Sean Konrad breaks burbot world record
Fishing Geeks' Sean Konrad catches 25.2-pound world-record burbot
NWWC EXCLUSIVE!:
Konrad adds another IGFA mark to Geeks' record list

POSTED April 7, 2010 / 10:50 p.m.

RIVERHURST, SASKATCHEWAN, Canada - You get the feeling that Sean and Adam Konrad have the International Game Fish Association records division on their speed dial.

The Canadian identical twins who have repeatedly re-written the IGFA world and line-class record book for rainbow trout in the last three years have added another all-tackle world mark to their resume: burbot.

On March 27, Sean Konrad landed a 25.2-pound Lota lota, a freshwater relative of the common ling, on Lake Diefenbaker, the 106,000-acre reservoir in southwest Saskatchewan where he and his twin — the self-proclaimed "Fishing Geeks" — have established nearly a dozen IGFA records since 2007.

NW Wild Country A.M. Briefing 3-20, Shangle on ESPN Saltwater TV
VIDEO WALL:
Shangle brings the West Coast funk to "Saltwater TV"

NEW March 30, 2010 / 7:30 p.m.

ARLINGTON, Wash. - I started writing my West Coast Saltwater column for ESPN Outdoors back in August, part of the site's grand plan to expand its saltwater coverage across the country through local columnists Doug Pike, Chris Gatley, David Brown and myself.

The boys and girls back at EO took it one step further last month when they premiered their very first "Saltwater TV", a weekly web-TV show dedicated to all things briny.

Hosted by Rob Russow - who I had the pleasure of working with at the Duel in the Delta and Golden State Shootout for and Golden State Shootout last month - "Saltwater TV" airs every Friday at 2 p.m. PST on ESPNOutdoors.com's Saltwater page. My next appearance: this Friday, April 2, when I'll provide a preview of the historic re-opener of salmon season off the northern California coast.

NW Wild Country A.M. Briefing for 3-20, Hawg Chinook in Anacortes
27.48-pounder leads parade of 20-pound fish at 2010 Anacortes Salmon Derby
SALMON REPORT:
Thomas' 27.48-pounder leads hawg parade in Anacortes
POSTED March 29, 2010 / 11:10 a.m.

ANACORTES - The expression on the little boy's face outside the awards tent at the 2010 Anacortes Salmon Derby said it all. Gawking at the four fish packed in ice - including the derby-winning 27.48-pounder - the boy summed up the weekend in three words: "Big fish, huh?"

Big fish indeed, to the tune of nine 20-plus-pounders weighed in during the two-day derby. To put that in perspective, the three previous years of the Anacortes Dery produced exactly T-H-R-E-E 20-pound fish combined.

The hawgs were feeding in the San Juan Islands this weekend.

8READ ABOUT THE ANACORTES HAWG PARADE and find out about the benefits of the Anacortes Derby to our future fisheries managers, thanks to the Fidalgo PSA's scholarship fund.

Joel Shangle in Bassmaster.com and ESPNOutdoors.comNWWC's Joel Shangle reports on Byron Velvick's Clear Lake Elite Series win from Clear Lake
BASS REPORT:
Clear Lake bite goes swimbaitingly for winner Velvick
POSTED March 23, 2010 / 2:10 p.m.

Joel Shangle Blog MugLAKEPORT, Calif. - On Day Two of the 2010 Golden State Shootout last week, BASS emcee Keith Alan glanced at the deck of California pro Jared Lintner's boat as it headed out onto Clear Lake's big-bass grounds.

"Look at the size of the swimbaits on that deck," Alan barked into the microphone. "Jared Lintner, are you kidding me?"

Lintner just smiled a little and kept driving.

8READ THE REST OF MY BASSMASTER.COM FEATURE STORY on the Clear Lake swimbait bite, and how Byron Velvick turned his big-bait talents into a $100,000 paycheck.

NW Wild Country PM Briefing for 1-15
Shangle in ESPN Outdoors Monsters Lurking Humboldt squid
WILD NEWS:
Shangle hits ESPN Outdoors with "Monsters Lurking" column
POSTED Jan. 15, 2010 / 4:10 p.m.

Joel Shangle blog mugSEATTLE - Back in September, one of the first stories I wrote in my then-fledgling West Coast column on ESPNOutdoors.com was about the "invasion" of the Strait of Juan de Fuca by waves of Humboldt squid.

Thery're baaaaaaaack ... but at a lower latitudes.

My latest contribution to the world's most dynamic fishing/hunting news site covers the Humboldt squid fisheries out of the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego. As you can tell from the photo/graphic above, they don't play around with subtle gear down in Cali: that's all of 20 inches/24 ounces of Ahi Giant Squid jig buried in that monster's face.

Ouch. And pass the garlic and capers.

NW Wild Country's Joel Shangle writes most-read story on ESPN Outdoors in 2009
WILD BLOG:
Scoring the top spot in ESPN Outdoors' "Best of 2009" ...
POSTED Jan. 6, 2010 / 8:10 a.m.

Joel Shangle blog mugARLINGTON, Wash. - Every now and then, the stars line up, the planets align, and a great story comes together out of the blue. In early September of 2009, while researching an interview for NW Wild Country, I connected the dots between a 48-plus-pound rainbow trout caught in Saskatchen, and a 41-plus-pound German brown caught in Michigan. The resulting story - one that I dubbed "Trout Week in North America" - became the most widely read outdoors story on the world's most prolific outdoors website, ESPNOutdoors.com.

8CLICK HERE TO READ THE AMAZING STORY of two world-record trout caught within 4 days of one another: Sean Konrad's 48-pound rainbow and Tom Healy's 41-pound, 2-ounce German brown.

NWWC ON ESPN OUTDOORS: Following Corey's Excellent Adventure
NEW Dec. 2, 2009 / 5:45 p.m

SEATTLE - You get a feeling that you don’t want to be across the table from Corey Cogdell in her first-ever arm-wrestling match. Or her first-ever hand of five-card stud. Or her first-ever game of beer pong.

Joel Blog MugThe 23-year-old Olympic trap medalist – who first stepped to the line in an international trap competition in April of 2006 at the age of 19, and just two years later won the bronze medal in women’s trap at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China – is one of those kinds of competitors.

The first time you face off against Corey Cogdell – especially if it involves shooting or hunting – is probably going to end with you getting beaten. Badly.
